You know that old saying when you look good you feel good? Well when my lupus rash is tamed in public I feel more confident and ready to tackle whatever the day holds. A lupus rash is a red sometimes blotchy facial rash that can show up at any time. It’s very uncomfortable for most people with lupus not only physically but can mentally take a toll causing feelings of embarrassment when in public. Not to worry, over the three years I’ve been sick I have perfected a makeup routine to cover my lupus rash and protect my sensitive skin.
When looking for makeup for lupus skin we are really focusing on two main categories. Makeup that is good for dry skin, and makeup that is fuller coverage. Lupus can dry out your skin and dry skin and makeup do not mix. We want to avoid makeup pulling up or caking up due to dryness. There are a couple of easy ways to avoid these issues: hydrating makeup products, and an extra moisturizer base.
What is lupus?
Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself by mistaking healthy cells for foreign invaders.

My favorite makeup products for Lupus skin
With the sun being enemy number 1 of lupus we want to apply a heavy-duty sunscreen under our foundation (even if our foundation has SPF included). This is the only SPF I’ve found that doesn’t irritate my skin. It can be a little expensive so a drug store alternative I would recommend would be the cereave AM moisturizer with SPF. I feel like you really get what you pay for when it comes to sunscreen for facial sunscreen but I know Elta MD can get expensive quickly. Click here to check out another drug store option I like.
Behind every flawless face of makeup there is a extra hydrating moisturizer and a primer. I love Cerave’s PM moisturizer because it’s affordable, actually hydrates my skin, it’s easy to find, has never broken me out, and is dermatologist recommended. I use the PM moisturizer morning and night. Most importantly right before I’m putting on my makeup because it helps products go on smoothly, not creases as quickly, and helps you avoid the “cakey” makeup look.
I’ve talked about this foundation before it is really just that good. Specifically for lupus because it is 100% full coverage and can and will cover a lupus rash. Again this product can be pricey but it is so full coverage you barely have to use any. I’ve noticed it has lasted me way longer than any other foundation I have had so it’s easy for me to justify the $39 price tag for the foundation. Again spending that much on foundation isn’t always realistic so click here to check out my favorite drug store foundation that can cover a butterfly rash while not breaking the bank.
Now a good powder that will help keep your foundation in place and doing it’s job covering your lupus rash is the icing on the cake. I love Laura Mercier I genuinely think it’s worth the money for the flawless look it gives you every time. But actually, right now I’m using the Maybelline fit me which is my second favorite because the $49 price tag on the laura Mercier isn’t always doable.
Along with a full coverage foundation, I feel like a full coverage concealer is just as important. Nars has the best concealer I’ve tried to date. I know this is also an expensive product BUT it’s by far one of the easiest products to use with dry skin. I have no issues blending it out and you can cover anything with this. On days when I don’t want to put foundation on, I have used this concealer for a lighter coverage on top of my lupus rash. A drug store dupe for this would be the elf camo concealer. The only con to this dupe is sometimes I have noticed it can turn slightly orange.
