Health benefits of Manuka honey

April 10, 2024 · In: natural remedies

In the world of natural remedies, few substances hold as much acclaim as Manuka honey. Popular for its unique properties and potent healing abilities, Manuka honey has been used for centuries for its therapeutic benefits. Derived from the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) native to New Zealand and parts of Australia, this special type of honey offers a wide array of health-promoting properties that set it apart from traditional honey varieties. Let’s look at the benefits manuka honey has to offer.

  • Powerful Antibacterial Properties: One of the most notable characteristics of Manuka honey is its exceptional antibacterial potency. Unlike conventional honey, which possesses some degree of antimicrobial activity due to its high sugar content and low pH, Manuka honey contains additional bioactive compounds that enhance its efficacy against bacteria. Chief among these compounds is methylglyoxal (MGO), a naturally occurring substance that exhibits strong antibacterial properties. Research has shown that Manuka honey can effectively inhibit the growth of various harmful bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
  • Inhibit progression of cancer cells: One study found that Manuka honey can inhibit the process of carcinogenesis. By controlling different molecular processes as well as the progression of cancer cells.1 With this knowledge, I will be adding manuka honey into my diet daily!
  • Wound Healing and Skin Health: Manuka honey has long been prized for its ability to promote wound healing and support skin health. Its antimicrobial properties help create a protective barrier against infection while facilitating the regeneration of damaged tissue. Manuka honey’s high viscosity and low pH create an optimal environment for wound healing by maintaining moisture levels and promoting tissue repair. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in treating a wide range of wounds, including burns, ulcers, cuts, and surgical incisions. Additionally, Manuka honey’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce swelling and soothe irritated skin, making it a versatile remedy for various dermatological conditions such as eczema and acne.
  • Digestive Health Support: In addition to its topical applications, Manuka honey can also benefit digestive health when consumed orally. Its natural enzymes, antioxidants, and prebiotic properties make it a soothing and nourishing elixir for the digestive system. Manuka honey’s antimicrobial activity may help combat harmful bacteria in the gut, promoting a healthy balance of intestinal flora. Furthermore, its anti-inflammatory effects can help alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders such as gastritis, acid reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Incorporating Manuka honey into your diet, whether consumed on its own or added to beverages and recipes, can provide gentle support for digestive wellness.
  • Immune-Boosting Properties: Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, Manuka honey is a natural immune booster that can help strengthen the body’s defenses against illness and infection. Its antibacterial properties help combat pathogens, while its antioxidant content helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Regular consumption of Manuka honey can support overall immune function, helping to prevent common colds, flu, and other respiratory infections. Additionally, Manuka honey’s soothing properties can provide relief from sore throats and coughs, making it a valuable ally during cold and flu season.

My favorite way to incorporate manuka honey into my diet is by adding it to smoothies, yogurt, tea, or eating a spoonful by itself. It adds an amazingly sweet flavor that doesn’t compare to any other honey I have eaten before! If you’re like me and add cayenne pepper to your smoothies but can’t stand the kick. Adding one tablespoon of Manuka honey completely neutralizes the kick you would typically get from cayenne pepper. What to look for when buying Manuka honey

When buying Manuka honey for medicinal or health benefits, it’s essential to look for certain key factors to ensure you’re getting a high-quality product that retains its therapeutic properties. Here are some important considerations:

  • UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) Rating: UMF is a grading system used to measure the potency and quality of Manuka honey. Look for a UMF rating of 10 or higher for medicinal purposes. The higher the UMF rating, the greater the concentration of beneficial compounds such as methylglyoxal (MGO), which contributes to Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties.
  • MGO Content: MGO is a naturally occurring compound in Manuka honey that is responsible for its antibacterial activity. Higher levels of MGO indicate greater potency and efficacy. Check the MGO content on the product label to ensure it meets your desired therapeutic requirements.
  • Quality Certification: Choose Manuka honey that has been independently tested and certified by reputable organizations, such as the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) or the Active Manuka Honey Association (AMHA). These certifications assure authenticity and quality control.
  • Raw and Unpasteurized: Opt for raw, unpasteurized Manuka honey to preserve its natural enzymes, antioxidants, and beneficial properties. Heat processing can destroy delicate compounds and diminish the honey’s therapeutic value.
  • Origin and Traceability:Manuka honey sourced from New Zealand or Australia is generally considered to be of higher quality, as these regions are home to the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) from which the bees collect nectar. Choose honey that provides traceability and transparency regarding its origin, production methods, and beekeeping practices.
  • Dark Color and Thick Texture: High-quality Manuka honey tends to have a dark color and thick, viscous texture. The presence of pollen particles and other natural debris is also a sign of authenticity. Avoid honey that appears overly processed or diluted with additives.
  • Packaging: Manuka honey should be packaged in dark, opaque containers to protect it from light and preserve its potency. Exposure to light and air can degrade the honey’s beneficial compounds over time. Additionally, choose honey that is sealed with tamper-evident packaging for added safety and freshness.
  • Price: While high-quality Manuka honey may come at a premium price, be wary of products that are significantly cheaper than others on the market. Extremely low prices may indicate inferior quality or adulteration with non-Manuka honey varieties. Invest in a reputable brand that prioritizes authenticity and transparency.

By paying attention to these factors when purchasing Manuka honey for medicinal or health purposes, you can ensure that you’re getting a genuine, potent product that delivers the therapeutic benefits associated with this remarkable natural remedy.

Manuka honey stands out as a true superfood, offering a wide variety of health benefits that extend far beyond conventional honey varieties. From its potent antibacterial properties to its wound-healing prowess and immune-boosting abilities, Manuka honey has earned its reputation as a powerhouse of natural medicine. Whether used topically or consumed orally, incorporating Manuka honey into your health and wellness routine can provide a delicious and effective way to support your body’s innate healing mechanisms. So, the next time you reach for a jar of honey, consider trying out Manuka honey and its benefits!
