Having a hair care routine that keeps your hair healthy and strong….and works with lupus hair. Is not easy to find. After months of trial and error, I’m ready to share my haircare routine that took my hair from dry and brittle to strong and moisturized.
Hair loss has been known to be associated with Lupus. If you’re struggling with a concerning amount of hair loss check out our post on Lupus hair loss. But if you’re just looking for a strong hair care routine keep reading we’ve got you covered.
Wash cycle
Getting on a wash cycle instead of washing my hair every day has shown the most improvement in the strength of my hair. I was against the idea of not washing my hair every day until I came up with a routine where on the days I work out I wash my hair. Not only has my hair gotten strong but I find I have less oily hair, less dandruff, and silkier hair.
I wash my hair every 2-3 days. A few of my friends wash their hair once a week. I know I can not go that long in between washes but if it works best for you I say do it. When I first started training my hair to not be washed every day it was rough. My hair was extremely oily and uncomfortable the first couple of times. It was the first time in 16 years my hair hasn’t been washed every day so it took some getting used to. But it was more than worth it and I save so much time not washing my hair every day. Another plus I’ve found is slightly dirty hair is much easier to style and I’ve found to look better!

Rosemary Oil
Rosemary oil is known to promote hair growth, and reduce inflammation. This has become a must in my hair care routine. If you’re on Tik Tok anytime last year you might have seen rosemary oil plastered all over your for you page. There’s few Tik Tok trends I try that actually work and Rosemary oil is one of the actually works exceptions. I use rosemary oil in a few different ways – at least once a week the day before my wash day I will put the oil directly on my head, throw on my silk bonnet, sleep with the oil in my hair, and then wash it out the next day. That’s my lazy way of using it but I see the best results when I mix a generous amount in with my shampoo then using a scalp massager go to town on my scalp. Scalp massages have been known to increase blood flow which leads to hair growth. Click here to check out the scalp massager I use!
Going Heatless
I stopped using heat on my hair a few years ago. Of course, over the years I have used a curling wand or hair dryer once or twice. But for the most part, my hair has been heat free. I’ve noticed my hair got 10x stronger and softer once I stopped using heat. I’ve opted to use an overnight curls headband to achieve the same hairstyles I like minus the heat. I honestly prefer not using heat now. When I wake up in the morning my hair is already done. I just have to pull the headband out and I’m ready to go!
Healthy Hair Habits
This step in my routine is most likely only for a niche crowd so feel free to skip it if this isn’t you. I have a really bad habit of twirling my hair/ just playing with it. The constant tugging can cause breakage and when I made a conscious effort to stop messing with my hair I noticed my hair got much thicker and I didn’t have as many split ends. It was extremely hard to get out of the habit of playing with my hair because it was comforting. Instead, I try to keep a fidget toy close by if I’m really needing to get extra energy out.
Silk pillowcase
Silk is a non-friction fabric and that’s why it’s the perfect material for pillowcases. Other materials that do not allow your hair to glide across can cause breakage and hair loss throughout the night while you sleep. Since changing to a silk pillowcase I have noticed less hair on my pillowcase, fewer split ends, and my hair has been softer. This is one of the easiest parts of my hair care routine that I swear by. Silk pillowcases are easy to find. You can get a real silk pillowcase from amazon for around $25 bucks!
Vitamins
Vitamins are a part of my haircare routine – there are loads of options when it comes to vitamins that have been known to aid in healthy hair. I’ve found biotin, Vitamin d3 with k2, b-12, and omega-3’s (I take cod liver oil) have showed the most improvement in the overall health, thickness, and growth of my hair. You can click the name of each vitamin if you want to check out the exact ones I take. Always do your own research and talk with your doctor – this is just what works for me!
My lupus hair care routine is still open to change. But the routine I’ve accumulated so far has taken my hair from dry, brittle, and breaking to strong, thick, and silky. Let me know how you take care of your hair with Lupus in the comments!
