Natural remedies for Lupus fatigue

October 25, 2023 · In: lupus

Balancing Lupus fatigue while still having a life can sometimes feel like an impossible feat. After writing my first post about Lupus fatigue, it quickly gained traction and a few emails in my inbox. I had written the original post sometime last year, so I decided it was time to make a new “Managing Lupus fatigue.”

Fatigue is one of the most common and frustrating symptoms experienced by people with lupus. Lupus fatigue goes beyond feeling tired; it’s a bone-deep weariness that can make daily activities seem like impossible tasks. But not to worry, natural remedies and lifestyle changes can help manage this persistent fatigue. In this blog post, we will explore various approaches, including the use of chlorophyll for energy, adopting a healthy diet, and other natural remedies to reduce fatigue.

Understanding Lupus Fatigue

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks its tissues and organs. Fatigue is a prevalent symptom because of the constant battle occurring within the body. Factors contributing to lupus fatigue include inflammation, medication side effects, pain, poor sleep, and emotional stress. Fortunately, natural remedies and lifestyle changes can help ease the burden of fatigue.

Chlorophyll for Energy

Chlorophyll is the pigment responsible for the green color in plants and plays a vital role in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll supplements may help increase energy levels and reduce fatigue. This natural remedy may be particularly beneficial for people with lupus, as it can assist in boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation. Here’s two ways I incorporate chlorophyll into my routine:

  1. Chlorophyll Supplements: You can find chlorophyll supplements in various forms, including liquid drops, capsules, or powder. Follow the recommended dosage on the product label, and always consult with your healthcare provider before adding supplements into your regimen.
  2. Green Smoothies: Create energy-boosting green smoothies by blending spinach, kale, cucumber, and a chlorophyll supplement. This can be a delicious and nutritious way to start your day.

The Power of a Healthy Diet

Diet directly affects the state, severity, and progression of SLE1. Making an anti-inflammatory diet a staple to reducing symptoms and overall disease management. A well-planned diet can help reduce inflammation, provide energy, and support overall health. Make sure to check out our blog post on “Lupus diet and nutrition” while your at it!

  1. Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Incorporate foods like fatty fish, turmeric, ginger, and leafy greens, which have anti-inflammatory properties and can help ease lupus-related fatigue.
  2. Fruits and Vegetables: Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure you receive a variety of vitamins and minerals that support your immune system and overall health.
  3. Balanced Meals: Opt for whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to maintain steady energy levels throughout the day.

Foods that fight fatigue

Certain foods can help alleviate fatigue in lupus for several reasons, such as reducing inflammation, supporting immune function, and providing sustained energy. Here are some foods that may be particularly helpful and the reasons why they can assist in managing lupus-related fatigue:

Fatty Fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel, sardines):

  • Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce inflammation, which is often a major contributor to lupus-related fatigue.

Leafy Greens (e.g., spinach, kale):

  • High in Iron: Leafy greens are a source of non-heme iron, which can help prevent anemia, a common cause of fatigue in lupus patients.

Berries (e.g., blueberries, strawberries):

  • Antioxidants: Berries are packed with antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and support overall health, which can help alleviate fatigue.

Turmeric:

  • Curcumin Content: Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may help reduce inflammation in lupus.

Ginger:

  • Anti-Inflammatory: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can assist in managing inflammation-related fatigue.

Garlic:

  • Anti-Inflammatory and Immune Support: Garlic has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit lupus patients by reducing inflammation and supporting immune function.

Quinoa:

  • Complete Protein: Quinoa is a complete protein source, providing all essential amino acids necessary for energy and muscle function.

Lean Proteins (e.g., poultry, tofu):

  • Muscle Health: Protein supports muscle health and repair, which can help combat muscle fatigue.

Citrus Fruits (e.g., oranges, grapefruits):

  • Vitamin C: Citrus fruits provide vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and can help reduce fatigue associated with infections or illnesses.

Nuts and Seeds (e.g., almonds, chia seeds):

  • Healthy Fats and Protein: Nuts and seeds provide healthy fats and protein, offering a source of sustained energy and helping to regulate blood sugar levels.

Green Tea:

  • Caffeine and L-theanine: Green tea contains caffeine for a short-term energy boost and L-theanine to promote relaxation, reducing the jittery feeling associated with caffeine.

Avocado:

  • Healthy Fats: Avocado is a source of healthy fats that provide long-lasting energy and help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Natural Remedies to Reduce Fatigue

In addition to chlorophyll and a healthy diet, there are other lifestyle habits that can help manage lupus fatigue.

  1. Regular Exercise: Low-impact exercises like yoga, swimming, and walking can help improve circulation, reduce stress, and increase energy levels. Consult your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine.
  2. Adequate Rest: Prioritize good sleep hygiene and establish a consistent sleep schedule to reduce fatigue associated with disrupted sleep patterns.
  3. Stress Management: Unmanaged stress can directly effect your Autoimmune disease due to the impact stress has on the immune system. Read our post on “Stress and Autoimmunity” for a better understanding of how stress effects autoimmune diseases. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as:
    • meditation
    • therapy
    • deep breathing exercises
    • mindfulness
  4. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can exacerbate fatigue, so make sure to drink enough water throughout the day.
  5. Consult a Naturopathic Physician: A naturopathic physician can offer personalized advice on herbal supplements and natural remedies that may work best for your individual needs.

Managing lupus fatigue can be a challenging journey, but integrating natural remedies, maintaining a healthy diet, and adopting a holistic lifestyle approach can make a significant difference. Remember that consistency and patience are key, and it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that these natural remedies align with your treatment plan. By taking control of your well-being and embracing these natural remedies, you can reduce the overwhelming fatigue of lupus and improve your quality of life.
