The best herbs for PCOS

January 22, 2025 Ā· In: Holistic Health

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects millions of women worldwide, causing hormonal imbalances, irregular cycles, insulin resistance, and other challenging symptoms like acne, hair growth, and weight gain. While conventional treatments focus on medications and lifestyle changes, many women are turning to natural remedies—particularly herbs—to help manage their symptoms and restore balance.

Natural remedies are always my preferred route, so I wanted to put together a quick post about Herbs that aid in managing PCOS. As always make sure to talk with your doctor before incorporating anything new into your routine!

Spearmint: Best For: Lowering androgens (male hormones) and improving symptoms like acne and excess hair growth.

  • Spearmint tea has been shown in studies to reduce testosterone levels and improve symptoms of hirsutism (unwanted hair growth). It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it a great choice for hormonal balance.
  • How to Use: Drink 1-2 cups of spearmint tea daily.

Cinnamon: Best For: Improving insulin sensitivity and regulating menstrual cycles.

  • Cinnamon is widely recognized for its ability to help balance blood sugar levels, which is key for women with insulin-resistant PCOS. Better insulin control can also promote regular ovulation and menstrual cycles.
  • How to Use: Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to warm water, tea, or sprinkle it on oatmeal and smoothies.

Vitex (Chaste Tree Berry): Best For: Hormonal regulation and menstrual cycle regularity.

  • Vitex works by influencing the pituitary gland, which helps regulate the production of hormones like progesterone and luteinizing hormone (LH). It’s particularly helpful for women with irregular or absent periods due to PCOS.
  • How to Use: Vitex is available in capsules, tinctures, or teas. Follow the dosage on the product label and consult a healthcare provider.

Saw Palmetto: Best For: Reducing androgens and supporting hair health.

  • Saw palmetto is known for its anti-androgenic properties, which can help reduce symptoms like excess facial hair, hair loss, and acne caused by high testosterone levels.
  • How to Use: It’s typically taken as a supplement in capsule or tincture form.

Licorice Root: Best For: Lowering testosterone and supporting adrenal health.

  • Licorice root helps reduce androgens and promotes hormonal balance. It also supports the adrenal glands, which can be under stress in women with PCOS.
  • How to Use: Drink licorice root tea or take supplements, but use with caution if you have high blood pressure.

Maca Root: Best For: Balancing hormones and boosting energy.

  • Maca is an adaptogenic herb that supports the endocrine system and may help balance estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels. It’s also known to improve energy, mood, and libido.
  • How to Use: Add 1 teaspoon of maca powder to smoothies, oatmeal, or tea. Start with a small dose and gradually increase.

Turmeric: Best For: Reducing inflammation and supporting insulin sensitivity.

  • Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that can reduce systemic inflammation—a key concern for women with PCOS. It also supports blood sugar balance.
  • How to Use: Add turmeric to meals, drink golden milk (turmeric tea), or take curcumin supplements. Pair with black pepper for better absorption.

Ashwagandha: Best For: Reducing stress and balancing cortisol levels.

  • Ashwagandha is another adaptogenic herb that helps lower stress hormones like cortisol. Managing stress is crucial for hormone regulation, as elevated cortisol can worsen PCOS symptoms.
  • How to Use: Take ashwagandha in capsule form, as a powder in smoothies, or as tea.

Nettle Root: Best For: Supporting liver detoxification and hormone balance.

  • Nettle root helps detox the liver, which plays a key role in clearing excess hormones, particularly androgens. It also provides anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • How to Use: Drink nettle tea or take nettle root supplements.

Milk Thistle: Best For: Liver support and hormone metabolism.

  • Milk thistle helps cleanse and detoxify the liver, which is essential for metabolizing hormones like estrogen and testosterone. Improved liver function can reduce symptoms like acne and irregular periods.
  • How to Use: Take milk thistle supplements or drink milk thistle tea.

Herbs can be powerful allies for managing PCOS symptoms naturally, offering support for hormone balance, insulin sensitivity, and stress reduction. While they aren’t a substitute for medical care, they can complement other treatments and help women take a holistic approach to their health.
